What is trauma surgery?

Trauma surgery is emergency surgery that’s done to repair injuries suffered during a traumatic event, such as a car accident. Dr. Absi is an expert in trauma surgery to fixate and repair complex or multiple fractures. He works together with other specialists on your trauma team.

Why would I need trauma surgery?

You need trauma surgery if you’ve been badly injured in a severe accident, such as:

• Having a car accident
• Being crushed
• Falling from a height

You might also need trauma surgery for a relatively minor incident, such as dropping a heavy weight on your foot, that nevertheless causes severe damage to bones and surrounding nerves and tissues.

Where do I go for trauma surgery?

Depending on your situation, Dr. Absi may be called to the hospital emergency room that’s treating you. However, after your other injuries have been stabilized, you may also be referred to Orthopaedics of Atlanta and Aesthetic Institute, where Dr. Absi treats your broken bones. 

What happens when I have trauma surgery?

As an orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Absi’s focus is on restoring the health and function of your bones as well as the surrounding tissues, such as ligaments, tendons, and muscles. He’s an expert at treating fractures of the:

• Elbow
• Radius
• Ulna

If you have multiple fractures or injuries, he works with your trauma team to determine which should be addressed first. If you have a complex fracture or fractures, he may perform internal fixation, which is a method of holding broken bone pieces together with metal pins, screws, and plates. 

After your bones have healed, Dr. Absi removes the fixation devices. He recommends physical therapy to strengthen the muscles, tendons, and ligaments around the bones and to prevent or reverse muscle wasting due to lack of use.

If you have a broken wrist or ankle, you don’t necessarily need to be treated at an expensive, time-intensive emergency room situation.
